{"id":3262,"date":"2020-03-02T19:00:04","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.visitcastelvetro.it\/?page_id=3262"},"modified":"2020-06-26T10:57:44","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T08:57:44","slug":"levizzano-castle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.visitcastelvetro.it\/en\/discover\/culture-and-history\/levizzano-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"Levizzano Castle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1583171806219{padding-top: 2em !important;}&#8221;][vc_column]<h1 class=\"deco-title sinistra\"> Levizzano Castle<\/h1>[vc_column_text]Located in the wonderful hilly landscape of the homonymous hamlet, <strong>Levizzano Castle<\/strong> is a fortification erected as a defensive bulwark against the Hungarians and subsequently granted by the bishop of Modena to the Marquis Bonifacio of Tuscany, father of the famous Matilde of Canossa.<\/p>\n<p>The last major restoration works, completed in 2007, have made it possible to recover a building of enormous historical and cultural value, making it perfectly functional for exhibitions, cultural activities, conferences, and events.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the city walls, there is the <strong>Matildica Tower<\/strong>, which serves as a keep and a chapel now deconsecrated. Starting from the 12th century, the complex was restored and enlarged by erecting the feudal palace, home of the Lord. Square in the plan, with a brick and stone mixed wall structure, it is crowned by a protruding apparatus, perhaps from the fifteenth century or from the second half of the fourteenth century, made up of small corbels, which support Ghibelline-shaped merlons, joined together at the top by arches, which they have a four-pitched roof.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called <strong>Stanze dei Vescovi<\/strong>, on the ground floor, whose ceiling has noteworthy frescoes, dating back to the 16th century. Coats of arms of the family adorn the coffered ceiling, together with friezes and allegorical figures; in the upper part of the walls, inside panels, there are frescoes of a chivalrous environment, sketches of a loving topic, hunting moments, but also rural landscapes with small villages, castles, which recall the surrounding places.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_media_grid gap=&#8221;15&#8243; grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1593160910950-7b5c1a90-01e4-8&#8243; include=&#8221;1311,1315,1313&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"paragrafoecm6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.visitcastelvetro.it\/scopri\/cultura-e-storia\/museo-rosso-graspa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ROSSO GRASPA \u2013 Museum of wine and rural society<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In April 2019, inside the Castle, the <strong>ROSSO GRASPA Museum of Wine and Rural Society<\/strong> was opened to the public.
