Up on Castelvetro’s hills there is a little farm, where time seems to have stopped since Sir. Mario Balugani took up the art of making Lambrusco wine with deep love, from the care of the vineyards to the bottle. The barn, where winemaking takes place, is an original farmhouse made of bricks and stones, carefully renovated. From the porch, with cross vaults, one can admire a breathtaking landscape and a ridge planted with vineyards. The farm is located in a 5 hectares field.
Since 1985 Mario’s son, Roberto, has continued to preserve the ancient local oenological traditions, by selecting well-framed Lambrusco. Being a winemaker is a rare privilege and it is absolutely rewarding: the high-quality products are the evidence of this reality. Balugani knows the innovative winemaking technologies but he also uses the ancient and complex techniques, such as those used to the best wine of the farm, the Sfecciato, that is obtained by the prestigious classic method (also called the champagne method). The term Sfecciato recalls the absence of dregs, which are solid particles naturally produced by the wine itself, during the fermentation in the bottle. In this winery, winemaking is carried out in harmony with the natural rhythms: a typical rural wisdom more and more difficult to meet and defend.
